The Mayan - 2023

This primitive stone head shows a Mayan warrior with feathered headdress representing both plenty & feasting (plump right cheek) as well as war & famine (ravaged left cheek), illustrating the rise and eventual fall of every civilization in history - including our own.

Zigzag - 2024

Zigzag is a repeating geometric form carved in a granite fence post. It transforms something mundane and utilitarian into an expression of striving ever upwards to a goal, however imperfect that peak may be. Although things often go sideways in life, the striving IS the goal.

Obelisk - 2023

Carved from a broken block cut out of bedrock a century ago and left half submerged after the quarry was abandoned, Obelisk honors a family of northern water snakes that lived around it for generations. Four snakes rise from the base, supporting each other, reaching for the pinnacle.

The Persian - 2022

Carved from a rejected stone found near the surface of a grout pile that had been overtaken by trees. The contrast between the untouched cap and the carved face is striking, as the former retains its veneer of forest residue, while the latter reveals the true light gray of freshly cut granite from the Treasury Hill pluton.

Trojan Horse - 2024

Carved in a reclaimed century-old hand-hewn granite step, Trojan Horse highlights the loss of women’s freedom and body-autonomy at the hands of an indifferent patriarchy, as access to birth control and reproductive rights are under an unprecedented assault around the world.

Snake Charmer - 2023

Snake Charmer was inspired in part by a limestone head from the early to middle Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (8800 to 6500 BCE) period found at Nevalı Çori in south-eastern Turkey (close to 10,000 years old), a site that has some of the oldest known monumental sculptures.

Karibu Troli - 2023

Karibu Troli – Guardian at the Bridge – is a primitive sculpture of a benign bridge troll with a terrifying grin, waiting patiently for visitors to answer his riddles before they can pass. It started as a badly split splinter of bedrock that stone cutters discarded 100 years ago.

Intersecting the void - 2024

A rough piece of discarded granite with opposing diagonal channels cut in opposite sides, creating a void at the intersection. The various sections that result from the cuts appear to be cobbled together and seem to defy gravity – which underscores the strength of the granite itself.
